The Clinical Observation of the Premature Infants and Their Feeding Habits

Abstract
A clinical and statistical analysis was made on 308 cases of premature infants,,admitted to the departments of pediatrics at Korea hospital and St. Mary¢¥s hospital during the period of May, 1972¢¥ to April, 1974.
Also a study of! feeding habits of premature babies who were admitted to four general hospitals was carried out in June, 1974.
The following results were obtained.
1. The following observations were made with regard to the births studied: 62.3% of the total births were NSD, 17.2% were, C-section and 9.6%, NVD. The brth rate was high in January & September. It was found that previous experience of abortion on the mother¢¥s part had no remarkable effect on the incidence of premature birth.
2. The general mortality rate of the cases studied was 19.5%. The mortality rate was high in July & November and it was high in cases of mother¢¥s more than 41 years old. It was found that the shorter the period of gestation, the higher the rate of mortality. Also the mortality rate was higher in proportion to lower birth weight. Initial weight loss was greater in the group of lower birth weight, regain & true weight gain during the first month of -life was also slower in the lower birth weight group. Within 24 hours after birth the average measurements of premature infants were: 45.9 cm in height, 31.2 cm round the head, 29. 1 cm round the chest.
3. The lower the weight at birth, the longer the waiting period before the first feeding. The quantity of this first feeding also was in propotion to the weight at birth. The feeding method begins with gavage feeding and gradually has changed to bottle feeding according to the baby weight increased. As additional nutrients for the prematures Vitamin K was given intravenously immediatly after birth. After three weeks Iron was given to the prematures orally. Nam Yang powdered milk was used regularly for prematures and some hospitals used Similac along with Nam Yang powdered milk.
